Who are the Grand Street Stompers?

The Grand St. Stompers are a New York-based New Orleans-style hot jazz band, reviving and refreshing the music of the 1920s onward for today’s listeners, swing dancers, and music fans. With the talent and experience of NYC’s top traditional jazz singers and players, they delight audiences at festivals, dance conventions, music halls, weddings, and other special events.

The Stompers are loved not only for their authentic performances of vintage jazz tunes, but also for their jazzy versions of songs from classical music, Disney, TV, film, and even pop music, as well as their own exciting originals.

DCLX’tra: The Craig Gildner Big Band

DCLX is proud to host the Craig Gildner Big Band for our June 22 Xtra!

The Craig Gildner Big Band is a thirteen-piece repertoire orchestra authentically recreating the sounds of the swing era made famous by Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, and others. Arrangements are direct transcriptions and stock selections that would have been played back in the day by bands across the country. Adding to the period feel, the rhythm section boasts calfskin drums arranged in a manner much like Krupa’s, gut wound bass string, acoustic rhythm guitar on a vintage Gibson L7, and stride piano solos.

The musicianship is of the highest caliber. Bandleader Craig Gildner handpicked each and every section from DC’s pool of talented musicians. The band can whisper and scream…and everything in between…all in just one song!

In October 2012, vocalist Chelsea Reed brought a few of her friends together to play some tunes in a South Philly dining room. Her plan was to form a band that played for swing dancers, so she could finally have the chance to sing her favorite songs for an audience that loved early jazz as much as she did. Since that fateful day, she’s been living that dream and couldn’t be happier about it.

Now, Chelsea Reed and the Fair Weather Nine are at home at swing dances, jazz clubs and concert halls alike. They have played renowned Philadelphia venues and travel the country year round to perform at both Lindy and Blues exchanges and workshops. They’ve had the honor of sharing the stage with trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Gordon Webster, and bassist Michael Gamble. They love exploring the roots of jazz and finding creative ways to interpret forgotten songs. Drawing upon the intensity of powerhouse vocalists, the ingenuity of 20th century composers, and the soul of the dance floor, Chelsea Reed and the Fair Weather Nine honor the heritage of jazz with fresh arrangements and original songs. They are silly, passionate people who love playing this music.

Presented in cooperation with Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, the National Park Service, and Montgomery County, MD.
